Presentation Summary:

Every person facing divorce needs a team of advisors they can count on. They need people in their corner to empower them and advocate for them.  The divorce lawyer takes center stage, and is often focused on hearings, discovery, and the court calendar.  A terrific estate planning attorney and financial advisor can ensure (1) the client is protected in the event of incapacity, (2) the soon to be ex will not automatically inherit 100% of the clients’ assets, (3) the client makes sound financial decisions regarding the asset division and is prepared for their fiscal circumstances post-divorce, and so much more.

Many people think that estate planning and financial advisory as items to address once the divorce is final.  A better approach is to make estate planning and financial advisory part of the preliminary stage for a divorcing client.

About Our Speakers:

Patricia De Fonte is an estate planning attorney and the founder of De Fonte Law PC, where she and her team practice Estate Planning With HeartTM.  Patricia received a Torch Award for Ethics from the Better Business Bureau in 2021, the Super Lawyer designation in 2021 and 2022, and was published in Estate Planning Strategies: Collective Wisdom, Proven Techniques of WealthCounsel Attorneys (Second Edition) on the topic of estate planning and divorce.

Mary Ballin is a Wealth Advisor with Perigon Wealth Management.  She holds a Certified Financial Planner™ designation, along with a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® designation. Through her 20+ years as a financial advisor she has seen too many women take the back seat to their financial matters, then when their spouse dies or they become divorced, they are lost and vulnerable.  Because of this Mary has built a niche wealth advisory business working with women going through a life transition like divorce and widowhood that complements her traditional wealth advisory practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Why every divorcing client needs an estate planning attorney and a financial advisor on their team.
  • How an estate planning lawyer and a financial advisor can support the divorce lawyer.
